Uganda Hospital (construction)
Written by Michael Kane
Project Overview
In partnership with: Kiwoko Hospital
Background
In 1988 a young Ian Clark found himself at a scene of devastation caused by two civil wars. He was surrounded by evidence of recent genocide and the despair of people robbed of the means of rebuilding their lives. The beginning of the Kiwoko Hospital ministry was humble: a clinic under a tree. However, it grew quickly and gradually a modern hospital took shape with adults' and children's wards, a TB ward, an obstetric unit, operating theatres, an outpatient building, a modern laboratory, a nursing school and staff accommodation. Regular outreach clinics are held, including an AIDS support programme in the community. The Kiwoko Hospital is now a large and busy place serving a population of 500,000 people. It is built on a strong Christian foundation, with evangelism and medical help going hand-in-hand.
The Project
To bring the electrical network/installation up to a safe and reliable standard. The hospital has been told that the earthing is very poor. Also the breakers and other types of circuit protection are well below standard. The hospital started with one building. Then a second one was built and cables were run to it. Then a third etc., etc. Now there are a large number of buildings over a wide area. The electrical installation needs to be revamped to better support the staff and patients.
