Sudan (MAI)

Project Overview
In partnership with: MAI (Medic Assist International)
Background
MAI (Medic Assist International) has established an agreed partnership with the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Sudan, headed by Bishop Elias Taban, to enable the denomination to establish and run a 50 bed Health Centre at Goli, Yei County.
Having emerged from a crippling civil war, in which the mainly Christian peoples of the south have been resisting attempts by the national government based in the north to impose Islam. Many people see Christian Southern Sudan as the barrier which has prevented the spread of radical Islam into Eastern Africa. Southern Sudan is one of the least developed countries in the world. With almost no tarmac roads and less than one doctor for every 100,000 people, healthcare is a highly restricted commodity.
In this strategic period of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, lasting until 2011, Christian leaders like Elias realise the urgency of the church being seen to care for her people, before Islamic charities seek to win hearts and minds where the bullet failed.
