Post Project Review
Little Hearts is a home for children suffering various disabilities. Mr Iyyapan and his wife Rita, ably assisted by numerous workers and volunteers, run it. It is home to over eighty children, many with sever mental disabilities. The home has a strong Christian ethos, with pastoral care provided by a local minister Pastor Kumar.
Much of the backing and support for this home is provided by CED (Cutting Edge Development) a Northern Ireland Christian charity who have a charity shop in Portadown.
The project was to redecorate the Health Centre and five of the school classrooms. As well as the work each member of the team was encouraged to spend time with the children. “What joy to see the smiles on their faces as they played simple games together”.
The team discovered Little Hearts is much more than a home. The dedication of the staff and the work of the physiotherapist helping children walk for the first time, were evident. It was wonderful to find, in this school, a place where disabled children are integrated with local village children and the Christian teaching. Hearing the children singing choruses and reading memory verses will be something that the team will remember.
The team also visited some of the villages destroyed in the Tsunami. Villages where they heard first hand the survivor’s stories and how Little Hearts is responding to their need.
Yes Little Hearts is much more than a home.
