Post Project Review
Six LIFT volunteers set out for Japan, our furthest away project in distance. They had an eleven-hour flight from Amsterdam to Osaka where Martin Crowhurst was eagerly waiting them.
Martin and Julie Crowhurst are a couple from England who are serving the Lord in Japan. They have been in Japan for ten years with WEC on a church-planting ministry. Part of their work is with Camp Ministries; the camp is on Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest lake. It is known as The International Friendship Camp and runs programmes for families, Church groups, school groups and young peoples groups.
Much of this camp had been modernised by the missionaries and local believers but it was felt that help would be needed for the final stage, the rebuilding of the kitchen. As the camp is in an earthquake area, the whole structure had to be built of wood. There was no road to the camp so the project team had to walk through the forest to get to it. The biggest surprise was still to come, NO nails would be used in the building of this kitchen. It was to be constructed Japanese style with traditional joints used during the whole installation.
The first week was spent making joints in many different types of wood. The whole team found themselves cutting out these joints wondering how this would all fit together. The second week with the help of a block and tackle the kitchen began to take shape. All the joints began to fit like a jigsaw. In a few days the kitchen was there for all to see and not a nail or glue was in sight.
