Post Project Review

We returned to Niger in 2003, but this time to the Galmi Hospital; in fact an enquiry from Vee Travers arrived by email before the project team had arrived at the Danja hospital in 2002.

After the team arrived and had settled in they were given a tour of the hospital. This is David’s view, "it really was impressive, though by our standards primitive.  The thing that surprised me most was the Christian witness in a place that was some 98 % Muslim. There were evangelists in the wards, bedside prayers, and constant showing of the Jesus movie spoken in the local language while patients waited to see the doctor".  Available services included:

  • accident and emergency
  • maternity
  • a mal-nourished unit
  • well equipped operating theatres
  • a large pharmacy
  • dental care

The doctors and nurses work under terrific pressure and in particular missionaries who work extremely long hours often with sick patients who have left coming to hospital very late.

The task for the team, based in the hospital compound, was to convert two semis into one house.  Work included:

  • replacing ceilings
  • removing dividing walls
  • blocking up unnecessary doors and windows
  • general repairs inside and outside the dwelling

Two sink units were removed and a new one built to suit the refurbished building.  A computer desk was made and the entire house rewired including the fitting of new sockets, plugs and fans. This was done so a missionary family could move in and parents and children would be together.
