Post Project Review
Our first project in 2003 took us back for the first time to a project we had worked on the previous year; the village of Ecouen just North of Paris. The Maghreb field leaders Gerald and Judy Brittenden ask us to return to replace the floor in the prayer room and to erect a new roof over the garage and storeroom.
The prayer room was located in the attic, and after removing the tiles, yes ceramic tiles, we discovered about 12 to 14 inches of concrete. We knew of this but did not think there was as much of it. Trevor McMillan, George, Trevor Robinson and John spent the next two days breaking out and carrying four to five ton of rubble from the house. We all got to know those 51 steps very well.
After that Trevor McMillan and George started on the roofing part of the project. After removing the old corrugated sheets they planned to install new fibre sheets, however, as they were more flexible than the corrugated sheets, more supports would be needed.
The roofing lads worked well and after the supports where installed and the new fibre sheets began to be added on top, you could see a big difference. Perspex sheets were used to allow more light into the building, new guttering was installed and finally the back was weather proofed with rolls of lead.
Back in the prayer room, part of the main beam had to be replaced and all the wood treated before new joists could go in. After adding the joists, the new wooden floor and skirting were installed.
