Niger

Post Project Review
Niger is a dry, hot and dusty land. It is also spiritually arid with few Christians. Over 90% of the population is Muslim but there are no restrictions on Churches and many opportunities exist to spread the Gospel.
Nigel and Carolyn Younge from Windsor Baptist worked for SIM (Serving In Mission) in Niger. Based at the Health and Leprosy centre in Danja where Nigel remains the hospital director.
LIFT’s project at the hospital involved working alongside local workers, to connect the hospital to the countries electrical supply as well as re-roofing buildings in the accommodation blocks.
Stephen McLaughlin the electrician led the team. Stephen was shocked at the condition of the existing wiring, the open meter box in the hospital and the lack of any earthing throughout the whole hospital. When Stephen was finished the hospital was much safer.
Trevor Windrum and Norman Graham, with the help of local’s, re-roofed two buildings. This was slow and tiring work as they had to contend with the language barrier, but as the work progressed this was overcome. With the wood so hard and nails made of lead (every time you hit a nail it bent) they had to pre-drill a hole for every nail.
The intense heat and humidity offered the biggest challenge and resulted in early starts and breaks every so often to rest so the work could be completed.
Niger is a real calling for missionaries to serve our Lord considering the many difficult conditions; it was our privilege to help those missionaries.
