Post Project Review

Vavoua International school, a missionary school in the peaceful country of the Ivory Coast, was our third project of 2000. The team were to finish an extension to the kitchen. The joiners were to erect timber roof trusses and joists and fix metal decking to it. The electricians on the team were to install a new meter box and the wiring of lights and sockets.

The team was to travel 3rd November, however, on the 22nd October elections took place which lead to civil unrest.  Over two hundred people were killed and a state of emergency was declared. The whole project was in doubt. On 28th October the state of emergency and curfew was lifted and things started to return to normal. With advice from the Foreign Office and Vavoua International school, LIFT made the decision, 1st November, to proceed with the project.

Apart from some burned out cars and a lot of army checkpoints (sounds familiar - ed)  the team reached the school safely. Work started and even when the temperatures soared to over fifty degrees they were able to carry out all that was asked of them.

Vavoua International School was more than just a School; it was a Christian community with everyone helping and looking out for each other. There was a real sense of love and genuine care for each other.

Unfortunately an armed rebellion in 2002 split the nation in two, the school had to close and at this time there are plans to reopen it due to the ongoing conflict.
