Uganda - Waakisa

Proposed Project Dates

17th to 31st October 2026

About The Mission

Waakisa (which means Mercy) is a Northern Ireland based Christian Mission, working with young, pregnant girls in Uganda, close to Kampala.  Unfortunately some of these girls are pregnant through no will of their own and are rejected by their families, or it is no longer safe for them to stay in their village or home.  Waakisa take these girls in and give them a safe place to live while they help them come to terms with their situation, feed them and teaches them how to care for a new child.

After the baby is born, Waakisa is there to help each new mother at every stage;  they also give them skills such as sewing, hairdressing and tailoring to help them support themselves.

When they are ready to leave the centre Waakisa helps find them safe accommodation and employment in the community and continues to keep in touch with the girls so they never feel alone.  Sharing the Gospel of Jesus, singing Christian songs and learning the scriptures is a large part of every day life at the centre.

 About The Work

Waakisa have built a new primary school at the rear of the site and would like to accept some boarding students to help with running costs.  They have asked LIFT to help with repurposing the existing girl's living block into a new children's dormitory, including showers and toilets suitable for primary school age children.
